Introduction to Feminism
Everyday Sexism
Watch the Everyday Sexism TED talk from Laura Bates (linked above) and answer the following questions:
1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?
She felt that sexual harassment was way too normalized in society and wanted to share other stories of women who experienced the same things.
2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?
It links to the concept of post-feminism as despite people thinking we don't need more equality, it is very much needed and these women believe they should have more fair and equal rights to prevent themselves from being harassed or prevent misogyny.
3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?
Women and men could share their stories all over the globe - this made the Everyday Sexism project not only really accessible, but a global movement in not just one country.
4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?
There probably will be if we get the proper awareness out and change what is normalized in society. Evidently, it's not just a law or legislation issue, so it'll take a lot longer than expected. But I feel like things could change in the future.
Media Magazine: The fourth wave?
Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here.
1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?
Networked feminism is the name for the 4th wave of feminism. It aims to tackle social equality issues present both in real life and on the internet, hence the name. People view it as a problem seeing as this new wave of feminism is more like a trendy lifestyle choice rather than a genuine drive to end gender inequality.
2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave of ‘networked feminism’?
1st wave - The Suffragettes
2nd wave - Equal rights and equal pay
3rd wave - "post-feminism"
4th wave - Networked feminism
I do believe we are in a fourth wave simply because the movement now is different than what is was during the third wave. This is a new era of feminism, to put it simply.
3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a short summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.
Everyday Sexism - a website/blog to post and share people's experiences with sexism
HeForShe - Campaign focusing on male support for gender equality
FKCH8 - A campaign focusing on the modern representation of girls and the huge social inequalities they face compared to boys
This Girl Can - the "first fitness campaign for women which doesn't shame or exclude them"
4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?
I agree with the concept of a "fourth wave" of feminism seeing as it's different enough from the 3rd wave to be its own thing. The invention and global spread of the internet allowed so many voices to be heard and shown compared to years before. People have a platform to speak out on.
